The Grape-Granite Belt

11 November, 2019

Chasing a healthy dose of country air, good food and wine bundled with jaw-to-the-floor views of nature? The Granite Belt brings a big game and delivers on all of the above! We've rounded up three ways to sip, stomp and sample the grapes of Southern Queensland Country:

Look, we don't want to alarm you, but it's only six weeks until Christmas! If you're on the hunt for the perfect tree, hit the harvest weekend and check out the Granite Belt Christmas Farm on Saturday, November 30 and Sunday, December 1. It's Queensland's only Christmas tourist farm where you can stroll down the avenues and select a shape to suit. And if all the festivities get a bit much – treat yourself to a drop at Ballandean Estate with a spot of lunch. The Stanthorpe Apple and Grape Harvest Festival is back this summer. "Crushing it" since 1966, the festival will be held at various locations around Stanthorpe from February 28 to March 8 2020 with grape crushing championships a spectacle not to be missed. Fun fact: Stanthorpe local Kerry Stratford is the 15 year reigning champion apple peeler, having achieved a personal best with a 5.1 metre Granny Smith peel last year, almost double the length of the runner-up's 2.7-metre peel. Apart from a brief practice run before the main event, Kerry does nothing to prepare for her biennial challenge. "I only do it for this, once every two years," she said. Longest apple peel competitors work against the clock, with a strict 10-minute limit to complete their peel.

Visit Sirromet satellite cellar door: Sip-hip-hooray! Grape-news for wine lovers, Sirromet wines – made from Stanthorpe grown grapes – can now be tasted at St Jude's Cellar Door and Bistro in Ballandean. Opened in April this year, tastings take place from Wednesday to Monday, and the team at St Jude's Cellar serve up delicious food and Fonzie and Abbot coffee.
